Introduction
Is she punk? Is she rock? Is she pop? Who cares? The Canadian singer has had a slew of hit singles of the past five years, most recently with the song “Girlfriend” which is probably playing on the radio right at this moment. She was discovered while singing church songs in Canada and, in 1998, was asked to perform onstage with fellow Canuk Shania Twain. A year later, she dropped out of high school after signing a record deal with Arista Recrods.
Life Story
Her first album, Let Go, featured the breakout hits “Complicated” and “Sk8r Boi.” These hits helped make Let Go sell an impressive 14 million copies. She was also awarded MTV’s Video Music Award for Best New Artist and was nominated for five Grammy awards, including Song of the Year.
Her follow-up effort, Under My Skin, was released in 2005. She released her third album, The Best Damn, thing in 2007, and the first single from the record, “Girlfriend” became her first number one song on the Billboard charts. The success of that song also brought controversy, as some music fans noticed striking similarities between “Girlfriend” and a 1979 song “I Want to be Your Boyfriend” originally performed by the Rubinoos. Lavigne publicly dismissed these allegations, claiming she had never heard of the Rubinoos.
Lavgine has also attempted acting, adding her voice to the animated film Over the Hedge in 2006. Her next film will be a thriller called The Flock (Claire Danes).
